Halloween, harvest activities planned

AS fall gears up and the Halloween season approaches, scores of attractions and special events open their doors, gates, graves and fields to the general public. The following list offers a sampling of the ghoulish getaways, family-friendly fun and haunted happenings in the Mercer County area this month.

Corn mazes

   » Find your way through the Maize Quest corn maze at Pilgram Farms on Eich Road in Delaware Township.

The maze looks like the Statue of Liberty from the air. Maize Quest not only lets visitors get lost in the maze, it also hides scavenger hunt items.

Hours: 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 16.

   » Lose yourself in the Family Corn Maze on Amsterdam Road in Liberty Township. Nearly five miles of mazes were cut into 10 acres of corn in the shape of the Statue of Liberty and a flying American Eagle. Pony and hay rides, face painting and crafts are also available.

Hours: 5 p.m. to midnight Fridays; 10 a.m. to midnight Saturdays; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets: $7 for ages 6 and older; free for children younger than 6.

Haunted houses

   » Ghoul Mansion, "The Scariest Haunted House On Earth" is open at 66 N. Main St., Sharon, every weekend through Nov. 1.

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays; 7 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Ghoul Mansion will be open every night from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1.

   » The Hubbard Kiwanis Haunted Mansion expanded by three rooms this year to feature 16 rooms of goblins, ghouls and monsters.

Hours: 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7 to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays. It is open Fridays through Sundays through Oct. 25 and every day from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1.

Tickets: $5. Several promotions will be held throughout the season, including $1 with the donation of a canned good to the Second Harvest Food Bank. For a schedule of promotions, pick up a flier in Hubbard businesses or call 1-330-534-3421.

Hay rides, haunted happenings and ghost tours

   » Mercer's Mystery Dinner Theater will be hosted by the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce. The event includes entertainment, appetizers, dinners, desserts and prizes. Costumes are optional.

Hours: 6 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18

Tickets: $50 per person, reservations required.

   » Certified Paranormal Investigator Alice Whitehill will be spinning ghostly tales at Loghurst, 3967 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield, Ohio. Ms. Whitehill, author of "In Tune with Spirits," will be offering a kid-friendly program. Participants should take a blanket or lawn chair and a flashlight.

Hours: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25

Tickets: $4 for adults; $3 for students and seniors; free for children younger than 5.

   » Yellow Duck Park, Canfield, Ohio, illuminates the "Ghost Lights of Halloween" and offers "A Witch's Ride through Halloween Town" through Nov. 1. The exhibit is open Thursday through Sunday until Oct. 13 and each night from Oct. 13 to Nov. 1.

Hours: dusk until 9 p.m. weeknights and dusk until 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

   » Take a hay ride -- haunted or otherwise -- with the Hartford Optimist Club on Friday and Saturdays in October starting Friday.

Hours: hay rides, 5:30 to 7 p.m.; haunted rides, 7 to 10 p.m. at Storeyland Tree Farm in Burghill.

   » Take a spooky Ghost Walk on Mahoning Avenue in Warren, Ohio, sponsored by the Fine Arts Council on Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25.

   » Scarecrows, a community yard sale and craft show, hay rides, pumpkin painting and a pet show are among the events offered at Grove City Fall Fest, sponsored by the borough of Grove City and Pine and Springfield Townships. A farmers market, face painting and refreshments will also be available at the free event.

Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Grove City Memorial Park

   » Hay rides, featuring Clydesdale horses, will be leaving from the Cannon farm each Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Nov. 2. The farm, formerly known as East Hill Guernsey Farm, is at 4766 Lamor Road in Hermitage.

Also offered are children's games, pumpkins, corn stalks and mums.

Tickets: $5; free for ages 3 and younger. A discount of $1 is given with the donation of a nonperishable food item for the Hermitage Goodfellows.

Hours for the horse-drawn rides: 5 p.m. to dusk Fridays; 11 a.m. to dusk Saturdays; 1 p.m. to dusk Sundays.

   » A Pumpkin Fest will be held at Wagon Trails Animal Park on state Route 193 in Vienna Township Oct. 18 and 19. Enjoy fall foliage while on a horse-drawn wagon ride of the park that features more than 72 acres of exotic animals. Unique fall gifts and decorations will be available in the gift shop, along with a large selection of pumpkins.

Tickets: $13 for adults; $9 for children younger than 13; $10 for seniors older than 65. Group rates for 25 people or more: $8 for adults, $6 for children.

   » Youngstown' Mill Creek MetroParks presents "Halloween" at the Judge Morley Pavilion. This family-friendly event boasts mummy wrapping and a pie-eating competition and offers walks through Extinction Graveyard and Superstition Trail.

Hours: 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18; at 6:30, a magic show will be presented by Joseph Glenn.

   » A Penn-Ohio Biker's Ball Halloween Party will be held in Yankee Lake Ballroom in Brookfield. The free party will offer live music and entertainment, a costume contest, hay rides, a bon fire and other fun. Costumes are optional at the event, which will be held regardless of the weather.

Fall events

   » The Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce Civic Committee is sponsoring a fall scavenger hunt until Oct. 31. Businesses will select an item in their office or shop to be on the hunt list.

Items on the list will be in full view. Once an item on the scavenger hunt list is found, the shop or business owner stamps, punches or initials the scavenger hunt list. Completed lists are eligible for a prize drawing at the end of the month.

   » Learn about herbs, wildflowers and nature at the Herbfest at Plant's Herb Farm. The festival will include presentations, hands-on demonstrations, handcrafted products and, of course, herbs.

   » The Conneaut Lake Fall Pumpkin Fest will be held next weekend at Conneaut Lake Park.

The festival parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Conneaut Lake. It will feature a giant cold air balloon, marching bands, baton groups, fire trucks, miniature horses and clowns to delight kids of all ages.

The pumpkin fest opens at 6 p.m. Friday with a car cruise-in and performances by Elvis Presley "Appreciator" Jim Moore. On Saturday and Sunday a lumberjack show sponsored by Carter Lumber will include demonstrations of sawing, carving, log rolling, ax throwing and more.

   » A Fall Harvest Festival and Craft Fair will be held at The Apple Castle on New Castle-Sharon Road, outside New Wilmington. The annual free celebration includes apples, cider, pumpkins, crafts and horse-drawn hay wagon rides.

   » Feast your eyes on beautiful fall foliage in Trumbull County on the Trumbull County Water and Soil Conservation district tour. The driving tour includes four stops: Hartford Orchards, Egg Artistry, Homecite Thoroughbred Farms and Colonial Gardens.

   » Crafts of all kinds will be on display at Yankee Lake's fall show.

   » Grinning and grimacing pumpkinheads will be scaring crows -- and other birds -- away from Riverside Park in Greenville from Oct. 21 to 26. The Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce will hold the judging for its "Scarecrows in the Park" contest Oct. 25; visitors may vote for their favorite scarecrow from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Cash prizes for the best scarecrows will be awarded. Businesses, groups and individuals are welcome.

   » Painted and decorated pumpkins will be on display Oct. 20 to 31 at the food court in Prime Outlets at Grove City in Springfield Township. Visitors may vote for their favorite entries.

   » More than 100 vendors will display their wares at the Old Hickory Craft Show at Hickory High School in Hermitage. The Hickory Band Boosters sponsor the show, with proceeds benefiting the Hornet band.

   » The Fourth Annual Kids Harvest Party in Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer on Oct. 25 will feature lunch, games, prizes and candy, and is open to all children younger than 10. Parents are asked to take a bag of candy to share.
