Borough council considering
parking ban on Elm Street

Elm Street residents could be facing a parking nightmare if a proposed ordinance takes effect. Greenville council is considering banning parking on the residential street, which runs between Columbia Avenue and South Mercer Street.

The problem, according to Elm Street resident Alyssa Wasser, is that many houses on the street, including her own, have inadequate parking.

"When my husband and I moved in, there was no driveway," Mrs. Wasser said at Thursday night's meeting. "We had to make one. We now have one parking space, and we have two cars. One car will have to be parked on the street."

Other properties, she said, have no driveways at all.

Council is considering the ban because of public safety issues. Council President Pete Longiotti said the street is too narrow for snow plows and fire trucks to get through.

Other residents, including Gary Williams, wanted to know what would happen if a resident was hosting a party or had company.

Council member Joanne Gibson Price said each resident would be issued two guest parking passes for company.
