woman, 61

A Pittsburgh woman was killed when the car she was riding in struck a deer around 9 p.m. Friday on Interstate 79 in Lake Township, police said.

Karen A. Melzer, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene by Scott Black, a Mercer County deputy coroner.

Police said Tracie Jo Plunko, 33, of West Mifflin was traveling north when she tried to avoid hitting the animal, which had run into the vehicle's path.

The vehicle rolled several times and Ms. Melzer was ejected onto the roadway, police said. The car landed in woods.

Two other passengers from Pittsburgh were hurt. Michael R. Melzer, 7, suffered minor injuries while Donald M. Melzer, 63, suffered moderate injuries, police said.

Everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt, police said.
