Authority name change would make things clearer

By Amanda Smith-Teutsch

Greenville Municipal Authority doesn't want its customers to confuse their water provider with their sewer company or borough government.

With that in mind, the authority board plans to include the word "water" in the authority's name.

Authority board chairman Dick Miller said last week he asked solicitor Warren Keck to look into the legality of changing the name to prevent confusion with the sewer authority.

Keck said the authority could get state approval to operate under a fictitious name. That way, he said, the authority board would not have to amend its charter to change the name.

Superintendent Bill Brady said the water authority is often confused with the borough and with the sanitary authority, which oversees the borough's sewer system.

Brady noted the water authority already uses its name inconsistently. The official name of the water company is "The Greenville Municipal Authority," but the outside of the office reads, "water authority" and some of the letterhead uses the same name, he said.

Board treasurer Jan Hurlbert suggested looking into the matter once a full cost for the change is known. The expenses would include fees for lawyers drawing up the documents, repainting authority-owned trucks and redoing office stationery.

Some suggestions for the authority's new name include The Greenville Water Co., The Greenville Water Authority and The Lakeland Water Authority.
