Summer storms have put

township road crew behind

The story in Shenango Township seems to be work everywhere but not enough people and time to get it done.

Supervisor Richard Flack asked Monday when a culvert pipe on Denamen B Drive was going to be installed. Flack said the resident has been waiting for months and the problem needs to be addressed.

Chairman Larry Robinson said the work in the township has to be done by priority. He said the summer storms have put the road crew behind.

"Everything that happened in a matter of a few hours takes more than that to fix," said Bob Fetsko, foreman of the township's road crew.

Fetsko said he would install the culvert pipe after he takes some time off, which he hasn't been able to do, unless the supervisors want to carry his vacation into 2004.

There are three full-time employees and one part-timer on the road crew, Robinson said.

Fetsko said he gets numerous requests and complaints about work that needs to be done, many of which supervisors don't even know about.

Fetsko said he has no objection to supervisors putting priorities on work that needs to be done. "Someone's got to decide if the main priority is putting pipe in people's ditches or taking care of the road," he said.

Stony Hill Road needs to be fixed before winter hits because there's a large ditch along the side of the road and water floods the street, Fetsko said. He said the water is going to freeze in cold weather and cause a serious traffic hazard.

Work is being finished on Raymond Drive, and there are jobs that need to be completed on other roads.

The township is also preparing to enter into an agility agreement with PennDOT.

Bob Zarecky, assistant maintenance manager for PennDOT in Mercer County, said an agility agreement is basically when the township and PennDOT trade services, such as mowing intersections and plowing roads.
