Board wants more compensation for land

Hermitage School Board believes it can get a better deal from PennDOT for land taken during the Route 18 widening project.

PennDOT took possession of two small parcels of district land through condemnation and issued compensation checks of $57,400 for one-tenth of an acre by the middle school, and $71,800 for a slightly larger parcel by the high school.

Solicitor H. William White III said he and previous solicitor Donald McKay believe the smaller check is sufficient for the land by the middle school. But they believe the larger parcel is worth more.

He said Monday he has sent a letter to PennDOT demanding additional money but would not disclose publicly what he has requested.

PennDOT likely will respond to the letter with its own offer, and the two sides will meet somewhere in the middle, White said.

White is asking the board to vote Monday to accept the smaller amount to close that issue.
