Man's foot severed as he tries to cross between cars

A Pymatuning Township man's foot was severed Friday when he tried to hop between two railroad cars in Transfer.

Police said Kevin Leroy Miller, 45, of 11 Railroad St., was walking home along Rutledge Road at 2:44 a.m. when he came to a railroad crossing that was blocked by a stopped train, police said.

Miller told police he tried to get between two cars on the train by crossing over the coupling between them.

When he stood on the coupling, police said, the train shifted and he fell. His foot was caught beneath the train's wheels and cut off, police said.

He told police he made his way to a neighbor's house and called for help.

His foot was recovered, police said.

Miller was transferred to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh from a local hospital, police said. A spokesperson at Presbyterian said Miller had been discharged but did not say when he left the hospital. Police didn't know if doctors were able to reattach Miller's foot.
