Housing called key

to independence
for the mentally ill

Angelo Stamoolis hopes a new apartment complex for mentally ill people who can live on their own will aid his ongoing quest to erase the misconceptions people have about mental illness.

While all primary residents of the 10 units in Farrell -- the complex is named Independence Park -- will need to be clients of the Community Counseling Center of Mercer County, of which Stamoolis is executive director, there will be no staff person living at the site, which was developed and will be managed by Community Action Partnership of Mercer County.

The residents have a mental illness that will need treatment for the rest of their lives, but they will be responsible for paying their own rent, keeping the apartments in good shape and anything else it takes for a person to live on his own.

"Employment generally follows having a nice, decent place to live," he said.

It's often hard to find a nice, decent place to live for center clients because they often make very little money.

That's where the federal government and the Federal Home Loan Bank -- which is not a federal agency -- came in.
