As Sharon businesses pull together to make sure the lights and holiday festivities go on this Christmas season, city council is trying to do its part as well. Council approved $2,500 in budget transfers Thursday to contribute to the Light Up Night fund. Money for the traditional event was cut from the current budget when council was faced with laying off employees, including safety forces. Light Up Night will be Nov. 20. Council also changed the time of its meeting that day to 4 p.m. so everyone can be free to join the festivities. Judy Morocco asked council if it had considered asking fellow residents to contribute a dollar or two to help keep Light Up Night alive. She said she doesn't think people would object to donating. City solicitor William Madden said the city can't take donations, so city officials are checking to see where residents who want to do so can send donations. In the meantime, downtown businesses and city officials are meeting and planning for the big event, Council President Fred Hoffman said. |
