Effort being made to curb

trash left behind by renters

Garbage. It's a problem for neighbors who have to live around it, and then it becomes a problem for the city.

That's why Sharon Mayor David O. Ryan wants to amend the city's garbage ordinance to make landlords responsible for what their tenants leave behind.

Ryan told council Thursday there are various renters in the city who move out and leave garbage behind. The street department ends up cleaning yards, city officials can't find the renters and then there's a battle with the landlord, he said.

"Frankly I'm tired of it," Ryan said. "The neighbors don't deserve that either."

By changing the ordinance, the city will have more leverage with the landlords, Ryan said. He said if tenants leave trash behind, the landlord will be cited, given time to clean up the property, and if that doesn't work the city will take them to court.
