A 9-year-old girl was critically injured when she ran into a street and was hit by a sport-utility vehicle, Hermitage police said.

McKenzie Fryman of 805 S. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The fourth-grader was crossing South Keel near her home with a friend to head to the boy's house, said police, who received the call at 3:45 p.m.

The boy crossed safely, but the girl was hit by the northbound SUV, police said.

The speed of the SUV, whose driver's identity was not available, is not believed to have been excessive, police said.
