Times have changed and the definition of a bully is not limited to the biggest kid in school who wears loose-fitting clothes and beats up kids on the playground for their lunch money, said Beth Knauff, art teacher at Delahunty Middle School, Hermitage.

The definition has broadened to include anyone who has put down or teased someone else, actions that most people are guilty of at some time or other.

"If you have ever said anything hurtful, you have been a bully," said Ms. Knauff, who has a masters in elementary counseling.

Taking the lead from principal Allan Rummel, who has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying, Ms. Knauff had her nearly 300 fifth- and sixth-grade students make anti-bullying posters.

Before they started making the posters, she talked about bullying and tried to get the students to examine their own behavior.

She also laid out the consequences of bullying.
