Steve Kondos, owner of Penn West Tree Service in Sharpsville, stood and watched as Sharpsville firefighters doused the flames that spread through his two-story home at 118 Hickory St. Friday afternoon.

Kondos was working just a few blocks away on First Street when he noticed smoke coming from his neighborhood.

"I said, 'That looks like it's coming from my house,' " he said. "It's not a good day."

Unfortunately it wasn't a good day for Kondos, who lived at the house with his wife Andrea, 14-year-old son Adam and 5-year-old daughter Kaylee.

Assistant Fire Chief Edwin Getway said the house suffered heavy fire "damage in the kitchen area on the first floor and the fire also went to the second floor."

In addition, he said, there was extensive fire, heat and smoke damage throughout much of the rest of the wood-frame home. Getway said he was unsure if the house would be considered a total loss.
