Board wants help paying to extend
water lines

The Greenville Municipal Authority knows it's going to have to spend more than half a million dollars to improve water lines in Hempfield Township. But board members aren't sure where all the money is going to come from to pay for it.

"We can cover most of it," water board Chairman Dick Miller said Tuesday. "But we can't cover it all."

The three-phase project calls for laying new mains in the Fredonia Road area. The project, which is expected to cost about $620,000, is aimed at increasing water pressure and extending service to the area.

The first, most critical phase, is to improve the water pressure by installing several new water mains. The second phase is to install a new line and two fire hydrants on Donation Road to provide fire protection to Greenville High School. The third phase is to extend service to the start of a new development, Greenlee Estates.

For several months, board members have said they have been trying to communicate with Hempfield Township supervisors to suggest the township help pay for part of the project.

Letters have been written between board members and supervisors, but board member Dr. John Brown said the communication problems are frustrating. Newspaper reports have quoted both sides saying the other was being uncooperative.
