Woman ordered to turn over business documents

A woman who owned a Hermitage business was ordered to fork over documents relating to her business and to provide statements of any banking account she has had access to the last three years.

Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Thomas R. Dobson handed down those and other orders for Joan E. Ansell at a hearing Thursday, held at the request of First American Title Insurance Co. The California title company alleges in a lawsuit that for more than a year Ms. Ansell, owner of Ansell Settlements LLC, had been "misappropriating'' funds in a banking account she controlled on behalf of the firm and her actions resulted in losses exceeding $600,000.

Previously, Dobson froze three accounts she controlled at National City Bank and ordered that First American be given access to those accounts to conduct an audit dating to Aug. 10, 1998, when Ansell Settlements first began working for the company. First American alleged funds from local real estate deals that were entrusted to Ms. Ansell in an escrow account were improperly mingled in other bank accounts.

At Thursday's hearing Stacey Vernallis, an attorney for First American, said information about the accounts provided by Ms. Ansell is missing 2è years of information. Also, she said, First American had copies of canceled checks for cash totaling $17,500 written by Ms. Ansell on one of the accounts and another check written to her daughter for $2,500, with the notation "car payment.''
