Federal drug and gun charges net man 11 years in prison

A Farrell man was sentenced Thursday on federal drug and gun charges to 135 months in prison.

Romondo Oatis, 29, of 501 Pennsylvania Ave., has been free essentially on his own recognizance since Dec. 24. Senior U.S. District Court Judge William L. Standish, Pittsburgh, is allowing Oatis to self-report to serve his prison term, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Comber.

Oatis will be notified by U.S. marshals when he should report to serve his term, once the federal Bureau of Prisons has decided where to put him, Comber said.

The judge set a prison term at the lowest end of the range allowed by federal sentencing guidelines, Comber said. Taking into account the amount of drugs and his criminal history, Oatis could have been sentenced to up to 168 months, he said.

After the jail term, Oatis will serve 4 years' supervised release, the federal equivalent of probation.

He was not fined, but must pay a $100 special assessment charged to all people convicted of a federal crime.
