Outreach to pregnant girls seeks new home

When Lydia Smargiasso, 18, of Delaware Township, found out she was pregnant, the then-Reynolds High School senior wasn't sure where to turn.

Through a family friend, she heard about Pregnancy Services of Western Pennsylvania at 37 Stambaugh Avenue in Sharon and decided to go there to get help and some answers.

"When I went there, I was a little unsure of the whole circumstance. I didn't know what to think. I wanted to find someone I could relate to," said the current freshman at Shenango Campus of Penn State University, Sharon.

What she found was that she was not alone, and decided to keep her baby.

"I was debating adoption or keeping it. I knew I couldn't bring myself to abort a human being," said the wildlife technology major and mother of 3-month-old Tristan. "You don't feel alone there. There are a lot of people to talk to there."

That is exactly the kind of help that the non-profit agency director Jeniece Learned wants to continue to give her clients. However, with the pending construction of a Walgreen's at Stambaugh and East State Street next year, the building that houses the agency is on a list to be demolished.
