Some left without power for 5 hours

An electrical outage in Greenville cast part of the town in an eerie blue glow Thursday night after a woman drove her car into a pole on Union Street, said Greenville-West Salem Township police.

More than 1,800 Pennsylvania Power Co. customers were without power overnight.

Police said Stephanie Leonard, 24, of 7 Ninth Ave., deliberately drove her car into the utility pole at 11:43 p.m. Her car sheared the pole, police said, and came to rest on the steps of 24 Union St.

Ms. Leonard was not injured, police said.

The resulting power outage darkened homes on the east side of Greenville and also affected parts of downtown. All together, 1,864 Penn Power customers lost electricity, said Randy Coleman, area manager for the utility.

The blue glow was created when two primary electrical lines touched each other as a result of the utility pole being hit, Coleman said.

Repair crews initially restored power to 385 customers by 1:12 a.m., with another 511 customers brought back online at 2:35 and final restoration completed at 5:12 a.m.
