Starved dog's caretaker pleads
not guilty to animal cruelty

A Sharon woman charged with mistreating a 3-year-old Rottweiler has pleaded not guilty to two charges.

Linda Phillips, 38, of 323 Malleable St., will have a summary hearing at 9 a.m. Nov. 19 before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon.

She pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of cruelty to animals filed by Sharon police, and a charge of failing to confine the dog while it was in heat, filed by Chief Dog Warden Kathy Whiteman.

Ms. Phillips is expected at the hearing to enter a plea to a charge of not licensing the dog, also filed by Ms. Whiteman, said a spokeswoman for McMahon's office.

The dog, Sadie, was found Oct. 22 at Ms. Phillips' home emaciated and dehydrated. Sadie was ordered removed from the home by Sharon police and Ms. Whiteman.

Sadie and four of her puppies are being treated at Baker Pet Hospital in Clark. Sadie's condition is improving, while the puppies have been in good health.

The Humane Society of Mercer County has taken over the financial responsibility of the care of Sadie and the pups.
