Marriage vows then, wows now
-- 70 years later

By Patrecka F. Adams

When Elva Cathcart looks at her husband Edward, she still sees the cute young man with a head full of thick, black hair whom she fell in love with.

Her husband's memories from their wedding day are as deep as was the snow that November day: He can still visualize the dark blue dress his wife wore to the ceremony and the hamburgers they ate for their wedding dinner.

"We didn't have a fabulous wedding, that's for sure," Mrs. Cathcart, 86, said with a chuckle. "We were young and foolish."

The Mercer couple shared their special memories as they prepare to commemorate 70 years of marriage.

The Cathcarts were married Nov. 8, 1933, in Ripley, N.Y., during the Great Depression. He was 23 and she was 16. They both lived in Clarion County, she in Miola and he in Limestone.

Cathcart recalled how they met.
