Sports writer, reporter join staff at Herald

The Herald has added a pair of reporters to its news-gathering team.

» Dawn Fabrey, Hermitage, has been hired as a sports writer.

» Cary M. Snyder, Brookfield, has joined the staff as a general assignment reporter.

Fabrey, a 2003 graduate of Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohio, with a bachelor's in mass media, was hired to replace Russell Adkins, who resigned in August to attend law school at the University of Pittsburgh.

Snyder, a 2002 graduate of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, replaces general assignment reporter Larissa Theodore, who resigned to join the Beaver County (Pa.) Times.

In addition to an undergraduate degree in English and history, Snyder has completed coursework toward a master's in news writing and reporting at Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in Athens, Ohio.

Fabrey served an internship at The Herald from May through August in 2002 in the sports department. She was active in Mount Union's radio station and was a public relations assistant at the college.

In addition to covering sports for The Herald, Fabrey also will serve as a page designer in the department, where she joins sports editor Lynn Saternow and assistant sports editor Ed Farrell.

Snyder, formerly of Demarest, N.J., spent last summer in Minneapolis as a contributing writer for MLB.com, the Internet Web site for Major League Baseball, covering the Minnesota Twins.

While at Kenyon, where he specialized in American literature and American history, he was a staff writer for the Collegian, writing general news and feature stories for the college's weekly newspaper.

In his job at The Herald, Snyder will cover Trumbull County news and help with entertainment and agriculture stories.

"We're excited about Dawn and Cary joining The Herald's news-gathering team," said James A. Raykie Jr., Herald editor. "Their talent and enthusiasm will help to strengthen an already solid community newspaper."
