Council nixes Broadway-MLK name change

A proposal to rename the section of state Route 60 running through the Shenango Valley for slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. took a hit Wednesday when Wheatland council voted against the name change.

Council voted against changing the road's local name from Broadway to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard based solely on opposition from borough residents and business owners, said council President David Cusick.

The vote was unanimous. Cusick, Nita Buczo, George Keryan and Robert Davis voted to keep the name. Council members Donald Stinedurf, Lorraine Jones and Dick Campman were not present.

Cusick said the borough went through a name change before, when the same stretch was renamed Victor Posner Boulevard, in honor of the former Sharon Steel boss.
