A day after the elections strange political bedfellows met in Sharon. This disparate group included the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association and the United Steelworkers of America -- two organizations with distinctly different views of the world. But when it came to trade they found common ground to form the Coalition for Trade Sanity, an organization devoted to stopping what they see as a flood of imports that is crippling American manufacturers. A couple dozen people attended the session at the Pennsylvania State University Shenango Campus auditorium, where panelists called for action on imports to stem the hemorrhaging of American manufacturing jobs. "We've become victims of economic terrorism,'' said Jim Panyard, president and chief executive officer of the manufacturers association. "This is the most serious public problem I've been involved with in 35 years.'' Among the group's goals is to get a moratorium on any new free trade agreements and a review of existing agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement. |
