Buyer to close a Great Lakes office

MONROEVILLE -- Canadian National Railway will close the Monroeville headquarters of Great Lakes Transportation LLC, cutting all 46 jobs at the office within two years.

Canadian National last month announced it was buying Great Lakes Transportation from Blackstone Group for $380 million.

Great Lakes owns Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad -- a Civil War-era company that traces its birth to the Greenville area. B&LE is also based in Monroeville and employs a total of 184, with 95 of those working in the Greenville area.

Canadian National plans to cut 122 Great Lakes jobs overall, including those at the Monroeville office.

Most of Great Lakes' 968 employees work at facilities in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio.
