PITTSBURGH -- A pair of Texas men who effectively volunteered for their own arrest in Mercer County are facing 10 years to life in prison and a fine of $4 million, or both, after pleading guilty Thursday in federal court to a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine worth between $5.8 million and $8 million. Charges against Roberto Maldonado, 37, and Carlos Meza Jr., 41, both of Canutillo, stem from a Jan. 24 accident in which their pickup crashed in the snow along Interstate 80. According to a release from U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, trooper Charles Moran came upon the crashed pickup and then upon Maldonado and Meza, walking along the berm. He offered them a ride to the next exit to find a tow truck. Maldonado commented to Moran, "I guess I'm under arrest." Moran, believing the comment to be a joke, replied, "For what?" |
