Police didn't expect $1,600 lockup bill

Some people pay $59.95 a night for a hotel room and continental breakfast.

Mercer Police Department is being billed by Mercer County Regional Council of Governments about $18 an hour to hold prisoners overnight in its Greenville Regional Lockup, and that doesn't include food.

Mercer Police Chief Dave Fockler and some council members have a problem with that.

Although there's no formal agreement, borough police are allowed to lodge their prisoners overnight in the county jail at no charge. But when the 144-bed county jail is full, Mercer's prisoners are sent to Greenville.

"If the county jail isn't going to take them, we have a problem," Fockler said. "We're getting soaked for the entire bill."

The $1,600 bill covers lockup services from May -- when COG took over the Greenville lockup -- to this month and breaks down to about $18 an hour for about 18 people, Fockler said.
