Construction chaos confounds
cops and council

More than a month after "emergency" work on the Greenville Borough Building stopped, prehung doors, bare drywall and construction dust litter council chambers. A large hole gapes in the police department office.

"What is the status of the work on the borough building?" Mayor Clifford Harriger asked Tuesday night. "We're in more of an emergency now than we were before."

While Mercer County Regional Council of Governments has made about $35,000 in improvements so far to the Greenville Regional Lockup, some final cosmetic renovations are still needed.

Council chambers adjoin the areas where much of the lockup work is being done, and some of the construction materials are being kept temporarily in council's quarters.

The work, paid for by a state grant, includes electrical and plumbing upgrades, widening the entranceway and replacing cell cameras.

James DeCapua, executive director of COG, said the work done earlier was strictly to get the lockup ready for use by COG.

"The cameras didn't work, and the entrance hallway wasn't up to code," DeCapua said.
