Driver in wrong-way crash charged

A Masury man is facing several charges after a head-on, wrong-way collision that sent two people to the hospital Friday.

According to Brookfield police, James E. Murray Jr., 53, of Sharon-Bedford Road, was charged with drunken driving, aggravated vehicular assault and failure to comply with the order of a policeman.

Murray was released from St. Elizabeth Health System in Youngstown on Saturday and taken to Trumbull County Jail in Warren. The driver of the car that Murray hit while traveling west in the eastbound lanes of state Route 82 was also taken to St E's after the crash, but police wouldn't release his name, citing federal privacy laws.

Murray's story began at about 7:30 that night when a caller reported a car had hit and ridden a guardrail for some distance near Oxford Automotive on Sharon-Bedford Road and kept going.

Police said a cruiser and Brookfield's two-week-old fire truck, responding to the hit-and-run call, were then nearly hit head-on by Murray's westbound car in the eastbound lanes of Route 82.

After a brief chase, a Brookfield patrolman laid a spike strip across Route 82, west of Route 7. When Murray's car hit the strip, it began fishtailing, collided with an eastbound car about a half-mile west of Route 7 and came to a stop about 100 yards away near the median, police said.
