Police watch for crosswalk violators

By Sherris Moreira-Byers
Herald Staff Writer

Grover Elliott, 79, who lives on Beaver Street in Mercer, likes to walk a mile or two everyday to stay healthy. Lately, his health concerns stem around keeping safe while he walks along borough streets.

"It's very dangerous. People do not pay any attention to the crosswalks. If you walk around the diamond and go in one of the crosswalks, I guarantee you, drivers will not stop for you," Elliott said.

Elliott said he is also concerned that crosswalk lines haven't been repainted at some recently paved intersections, such as Beaver Street and Butler Street.

Police Chief Dave Fockler said he aims to keep residents safer and 84 traffic citations were issued in October, up from 39 in September.
