Tuition situation characterized as unfair

School boards have no recourse when it comes to paying Mercer County Career Center tuition for students who attend charter schools and Sharon City School District Business Manager James Wolf thinks that's not fair.

Wolf told directors Wednesday the district could end up paying $38,000 more than was budgeted for charter school students this year.

Charter schools are electing to send students to the career center, and the center is billing the districts where the students live, even though they are not enrolled there, Wolf said.

Twelve students from Sharon who attend a charter school also go to the career center in Coolspring Township, he said. The district pays for half-day tuition at the charter school and half-day tuition at the vocational school for each of them, he said.

There is no clear language in charter school law saying whether a career center or vocational school should bill the charter school or the home district, Wolf said.

Wolf said he thinks the district should pay the charter school for a full day's tuition, and the career center should get its money from the charter school.

"It just doesn't seem right. It just doesn't seem fair," Wolf said. "I believe this is something we should continue to fight."
