It seems recently they've popped up on lawns everywhere, announcing to neighbors and passing motorists that Halloween or Christmas has arrived or a new baby is in the house, among other holidays and events.

What are they?

Large nylon, inflatable balloons.

The balloons, which range in price from about $36 to $70 and up, have become hot sellers in the Mercer County area.

"They are very popular. We've sold out everything but the snowman," said a lawn and garden cashier at Wal-Mart in Hempfield Township. She said the store has sold out of other Christmas balloons such as Santa, the Grinch, Christmas trees and soldiers.

The balloons were very popular last year as well, the cashier said. "We had a heck of a time keeping them in," she said.
