ag security area opens East Lackawannock Township residents have until Dec. 17 to notify township supervisors of their desire to add or withdraw farmland in the existing agricultural security area. A 30-day window of opportunity for landowners to make their wishes known begins Monday. After the modification period, there will be a review, a public hearing and a decision issued by supervisors. The law permitting its creation requires that governing bodies review established ag security areas every seven years. The area, officially known as the East Lackawannock Township Agricultural Security Area, was created in 1990 and comprises nearly 5,000 acres. The areas provide participating landowners a few special considerations from local government bodies and state government agencies. The review allows farmers to assess the value of the security area, allowing farmers to either add or withdraw land from it. Some farmers, for example, have sold their agricultural conservation easements, or development rights, to permanently preserve the land for agriculture. The review also allow new owners to study the issue. For more information, contact the township office or secretary at 724-533-5171. ----------sty------> |
