School district reacts to state budget crunch

With state subsidies being held up in the budget impasse, Lakeview school directors took steps to keep the district operating through the end of the school year.

Business Manager Cheryl Carothers said the district is short "a couple of million dollars" because of the state funds being withheld.

Superintendent Dr. Paulette Savolskis told the board Monday that she has heard nothing will be done at the state level to get the impasse settled before the Thanksgiving break.

The district is using local revenue and find balance money to meet the monthly bills and may have to dip into the capitol reserve fund before the state funds come through, she said.

"As it stands, we will be able to meet our obligations through late March, early April," Savolskis said.

She said she has checked into the possibility of establishing a line of credit at the Mercer County State Bank to supplement the funds in case it is needed.

Directors gave Savolskis permission to establish the line of credit in case it is needed.
