Bridge replacement
will reroute traffic

Folks on Princeton Street and Lincoln Avenue in Grove City may have to deal with a little more congestion next summer. But it won't be from pollen in the air.

A plan from PennDOT to replace the bridge over Wolf Creek on state Route 208, also known as North Street in the borough, will take about four months and will reroute most traffic along Princeton Street and Lincoln Avenue to Broad Street, tentatively beginning in June.

Council Monday approved PennDOT's request for .019 acre of additional property around the original bridge to make room for the new span and OK'd a temporary construction of an easement of .012 acre, also near the bridge area.

Borough Manager Terry Farren said the acreage given to PennDOT is mostly against the bank. PennDOT offered $500 for the .019 acre but council chose to waive that amount in exchange for PennDOT putting some extra work into Princeton Street to handle the additional traffic.

According to Farren, PennDOT will strengthen the berm with 6 inches of bituminous base, put in new stop signs and repave it once the project is finished. The borough will have to repaint center lines and crosswalk lines afterward.

Large truck traffic will be rerouted via Interstate 80, except for some that are hauling items for two local plants in that area, ALCOA and Montgomery Truss and Panel, which may be allowed to drive the local detour at set times, Farren said. That section of I-80 is parallel with Route 208.
