Wanted: A few good Santas

By Jeff Greenburg

Herald Staff Writer

The Sharpsville Service Club is in need of a few good Santas.

The club, which has been providing Christmas Eve cheer to the children of the borough for many years, is looking for more volunteers this year, Gary "Gus" Grandy said.

Grandy, who is co-chairing the event with his brother Len, said the club normally likes to have 24 Santas penciled in. And counting helpers for each, he said about 50 people in all are needed.

"Helpers are easier to come by, but to get people to put that suit on and act goofy, that's a different story," Grandy said with a laugh, noting the club provides the suits for any willing jolly old elfs.

Grandy said volunteers are asked to arrive at the Sharpsville Veterans of Foreign Wars post at about 5:15 p.m. Christmas Eve. They usually start their rounds at 6:30 and finish about 9 or 9:30, depending on how much help they have.
