Jewell installed GCC president

Grove City College installed its eighth president Saturday.

And Dr. Richard G. Jewell got through it with a little help from his friends -- along with family and GCC alumni.

Edward Breen, chief executive officer of TYCO International Ltd., and former Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh spoke at the installation ceremony.

Breen, who graduated from GCC in 1978, worked with Jewell on the board of trustees and said he knows Jewell is passionate about Grove City College. "When I think of him," Breen said, "I think of two things: passion and compassion."

Jewell, the first alumnus selected to lead the college in almost 50 years, is a 1967 graduate and longtime Bethel Park resident. He left his Pittsburgh position as a director of the Chicago-based Navigant Consulting Inc., the nation's largest forensic accounting firm, to take over for Dr. John H. Moore, who retired last summer.
