'Season
of Light'
explores
traditions

The sky show "Season of Light" can be viewed at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 and 2 p.m. Dec. 6 in Westminster College Planetarium, New Wilmington.

"'Season of Light' focuses on the symbolism of light during the winter solstice season," said Dr. Samuel Lightner IV, professor and chairman of physics. "Solstice celebrations can be traced back to prehistoric times, and mark the beginning of many of today's holiday traditions. The show proceeds through history and location, exploring the history of the Dec. 25 date, and its connection with this astronomically important time of the year."

While retelling the Christian story of the birth of Jesus Christ, "Season of Light" also examines the history of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, and the beginning of the traditions of holiday decorating, feasting, and exchanging gifts.

Included in the show is a look at the stars and constellations of the winter sky, a review of the basic astronomical concepts of diurnal motion and the seasons, and discussion of possible astronomical explanations of the Christmas star.

The program is free to the public; however, due to limited seating, reservations are required. For reservations, contact the Westminster College Department of Physics at 724-946-7200 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
