Ohio man is killed in pickup crash on I-80

A Deerfield, Ohio, man was killed Friday in a one-vehicle wreck on Interstate 80 in Shenango Township, according to state police.

Jeffrey J. Shilling, 50, was westbound in the right lane when his pickup went off the right side of the road at about 1:25 p.m., police said. It bounced off the guardrail before traveling back across the two westbound lanes, the median and both eastbound lanes, police said.

The truck then crashed through a guardrail and went down an embankment where police said it rolled before crashing through a retaining fence and coming to a stop in a creek.

Shilling, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III.

Although roads were wet throughout the day in the area, state police said they didn't believe wet conditions were significant enough to have caused the accident, but added they were waiting for an official determination from McGonigle.
