A 22-year-old Volant man who crashed his car in Pine Township while driving more than 100 mph and ran away from the accident that left three of his passengers seriously injured will spend 90 days under house arrest.

Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Thomas R. Dobson sentenced Matthew W. Brua of George Washington Road, Washington Township, Lawrence County, on Wednesday. Brua pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to causing an accident involving personal injury and three counts of reckless endangerment in the April 10 wreck on state Route 208.

Brua lost control of his car while passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone, police said. One passenger later told police that the speedometer read about 130 mph. The speed limit was 25 mph.

Brua's car went through a yard, hitting a landscape timber border before crossing the road, traveling through a field and hitting a tree, police said. Three passengers in the back seat, none of whom were wearing seat-belts, were thrown through the car's rear window.

Michael P. Schmidt, 23, Adam D. Knox, 23, and Todd R. Semple, 21, all from Grove City, were seriously hurt, police said. Brua then ran away from the crash site, police said.

"It was reckless and foolish, and fortunate it did not involve death," said assistant district attorney Bill Moder.

"I'm sorry for what happened. I never meant for anyone to be harmed," Brua said. He told Dobson he wanted to "hurry up" the night of the accident.

"That's not hurry up, 90 or 100 miles per hour," Dobson said. "That's insane."

Brua was sentenced to serve 90 days in the house arrest program, 18 months of probation, and complete 300 hours of community service.

Schmidt and Knox, who were injured in the accident, testified before Dobson Wednesday that they thought it was "more like an accident than anything."
