Supervisors hold taxes at 2.33 mills

Springfield Township residents won't be digging any deeper in their pockets to pay taxes if supervisors' proposed budget is adopted Dec. 15. Taxes will remain at 2.33 mills, according to the proposed 2004 budget of $519,080.

Increases in spending will go toward road improvements and setting money aside in a capital reserve fund.

"We were over in some areas because of a lot of storm damage to the roads from the rain this summer," said Pat Wimer, township secretary. "We had to replace some culverts and repair some roads."

Road repair and maintenance money was set at $145,300, up about $13,000 from this year.

As for putting money aside in the capital reserve fund, "We like to save money," Mrs. Wimer said. "The budget is kind of standard. We put the money where we need it."

A mill is $1 for every $1,000 in assessed property value; assessments are a property's 1970 market value. At 2.33 mills, a property valued at $10,000 would carry a tax bill of about $23.
