Snowy-road accidents put ambulances into high gear

While several inches of fluffy snowflakes blanketing the ground was a beautiful sight in some areas, snow- and ice-covered roads accounted for scores of traffic accidents across the county.

Several more accidents occurred as snow storms kicked into high gear in the afternoon.

Ambulances were kept shuttling from one accident to another. A supervisor for Mercer County 911 said the ambulances were "doing their best" to keep up with the demand.

According to Accuweather, about 4 to 5 inches of snow fell in the Mercer County area through early Friday evening. An additional inch was estimated to have fallen overnight, an Accuweather official said. Today is expected to be windy and cold with just a few flurries. No further significant accumulations were predicted.

A 911 supervisor estimated the center received about 100 calls about accidents Friday, with the largest amount coming between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. when many people were heading home from work. She noted that most of those accidents were minor.

A state police supervisor said at about 8 p.m. he couldn't estimate the number of calls state police responded to, but noted from about 3 p.m. to almost 7 p.m. the calls came in fairly steady, especially for accidents on the interstates. He also noted most of those accidents were minor.
