Post says policy holds kids to 'real world' standards

A policy created by Grove City Area School Board at least five years ago to make sure students complete each school year's work before they get a final grade came under question at Monday night's board meeting.

Debbie Pollio of Beatty Street asked school directors to reconsider their policy since the effect it had on her son was a failing grade in art for 2002-03.

Her son, Jonathan, now a senior, had six art grades during his junior year ranging from 85 to 100, but failed for the year because he did not put an explanatory paragraph with his final project, an art sculpture representing himself.

Mrs. Pollio said she and her son were "flabbergasted" when he got his final grade in the mail this past summer. He passed all his other classes, she said, adding that her son had never had a problem with the art teacher before the failing grade.

Dr. Robert Post, superintendent, defended the school's policy.

"The idea of the policy was that students' work isn't considered complete until it's completely done, just like the real world. Teachers do not have to accept substandard work," he said.
