Tumble-down storage shed becomes cleanup priority

Mercer borough council made plans Tuesday night to do as they say, not just tell residents what to do.

As council prepared to advertise an ordinance which will give council the power to enforce the clean up of property and the maintenance of buildings in the borough, they made plans to do some cleanup of their own.

Council member James D. Carnes described a visit to the borough's old storage building as a "tour of horrors."

"The building is literally collapsing. I would assume with a pretty heavy snow, it would come down," said Carnes, adding that anything of use inside should be removed and any old metal should be sold for scrap.

Also at least 30 boxes of records inside the building would need to be stored. Carnes suggested one of the Reznor trailers nearby as a temporary storage fix. "Then we can sort what we need and pitch what we don't."

Council passed a motion to sort out the items inside for storage and scrap.
