Thiel
freshman
athlete dies
in dorm

The Associated Press

A 19-year-old college student and basketball player died Thursday morning after complaining he had trouble breathing, authorities said.

Thiel College freshman Shawn Walton, of East Liverpool, Ohio, died at the hospital after he stopped breathing while in a dormitory, Mercer County Deputy Coroner Cris Loutzenhiser said.

Authorities said they had little clues about what may have caused the 6-4, 225-pound student's death. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

"He appeared to be in tremendous shape. It's horrible ... just a shame," said Donald Aubrecht, chief of the college's police department.

Police were called to a dormitory Thursday morning when Walton's friends noticed he was having difficulty breathing. Shortly after police arrived, Walton stopped breathing, authorities said.

Aubrecht said police did not suspect foul play and officers found no medication in Walton's room that could have contributed to his death.

Walton had four points and three rebounds in four games this season. He played about 10 minutes a game.
