Crane mishap draws OSHA investigation

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Friday the agency is investigating the accident where a hydraulic crane tipped over at a construction project in Pymatuning Township on Wednesday.

An OSHA investigator visited the construction site on Thursday, said John Stranahan, area director for OSHA's Erie office.

"We would probably investigate any contractor on the site to see if any employees were exposed to potential hazards,'' Stranahan said. "Clearly, we would be focusing on the crane operator.''

No one was injured at the accident where a crane was lifting roof material onto The Surgery Center at Edgewood Place. The crane fell onto part of the center. At the time a vice president for Deklewa, general contractor for the project, said the crane was owned by Erie-based Maxim.

Such an accident involving a hydraulic crane was unusual, Stranahan said.

"I've never seen any incident quite like that,'' he said.
