Buhl Club's Community Sing celebrates half-century mark

Tiny snowflakes, hula girls and leggy high-kickers shared the stage at Sharon High School Sunday.

F. H. Buhl Club's Community Sing, now in its 50th year, featured the song-and-dance talents of many area youth.

The event, which began in 1953, offers a holiday revue of the dance classes offered at the Buhl Club.

"The classes start in September," said Kathleen A. Janusko, administrative assistant for the Buhl Club. "And then five classes are chosen to take part." The club offers some 26 dance classes for all age levels, she said.

In the past fifty years, many people have gone through the dance classes at the club, and took part in the performance. Both Ms. Janusko and Dance Instructor Laura Krantz Carnuche were in the program when they were young.

Ms. Carnuche made sure all the performers, many of them under 5 years old, made it up on the stage. She herself had played the part of an angel when she was their age.

"I appreciate the community support," she said, "for the past 50 years."

Many of the families who once were onstage themselves are now sending their sons and daughters into the spotlights.

Avery Hoover, 4, was part of the Saturday Kinderdance performance. Her mom, Machelle, had been in gymnastics and jazz at the Buhl Club when she was a little girl.

"Its really nice to start it over again," she said, as Avery performed her favorite part of the ballet routine, a pirouette, tightly holding on to her gift from Santa, who made a special visit at the end of the program.

Taking the stage this year were the Senior Line Tap class, open to high school students, who performed to Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas" in black costumes, sparkling tap shoes and stocking caps.

The Wednesday session of Kinderdance, open to children in Kindergarten, performed "Jingle Jingle Jingle" in handmade costumes decorated with ribbons and bells. The Saturday session of the class presented the ballet "Snowflakes."

The second and third grad class, the Beginner II Dance, dressed in grass skirts with leis and stocking caps, danced to "Hawaiian Christmas Song."

The boy's dance class, open to all boys interested in taking part, performed an energetic rendition of "Tre Pak" from "The Nutcracker" and the Pre-K class sang and danced to "Toys, Beautiful Toys."

The program, which included sing-a-longs, was emceed by Mrs. Patty Norris and Jim Stevenson.

The dance classes will next be featured at the Buhl Club's Spring Fling in May.
