Someone has been passing fraudulent payroll checks that are so convincing business owners don't know they are fake until it's too late, Hempfield Township police said. "They look exactly like a regular payroll check," police said Tuesday. At least two of the checks were cashed at a Hadley Road grocery store this month -- one for $360 on Dec. 3 and a second for $400 on Dec. 4. Both of the checks had "holiday bonus" written in the memo line, police said. The checks were drawn on nonexistent trucking companies in Erie and Mentor, Ohio, police said. Police said the same person presented both checks and may have been using a stolen driver's license and check cashing card. |
