PennDOT tips for snow- and ice-covered roads

With winter weather upon us and snow predicted for the next few days, motorists may have to deal with difficult road conditions.

PennDOT officials said they have highway maintenance crews posted around the clock to try to keep the highways open and safe for travel.

PennDOT also offers tips for travelers as they navigate snow- and ice-covered roads this winter.

Drives should always stay at least 50 feet behind a working snow plow or other snow-removal equipment and should never pass a working snow plow unless the operator signals that the road is clear ahead. Drivers should also never try to pass or get between trucks working in a "plow line," which is several trucks plowing multiple lanes side-by-side.

Drivers passing a snow plow in the opposite direction should never look directly at the snow plow, and should instead pick a point along the right edge of the roadway as a guide.

Other winter driving tips are:

» Always use headlights in inclement weather to increase the visibility of the vehicle to other drivers.

» Beware of slop and small piles of snow on the roads..

» Use extra caution on bridges, ramps and roads that look wet but are actually covered in black ice.

» Do not park or abandon vehicles on snow emergency routes.

» Always keep a full gas tank and carry an emergency kit that includes a heavy blanket, flashlight, water and non-perishable food.

» If you are stranded, do not abandon the vehicle.
