Board still pursuing drug testing policy

By Patrecka F. Adams

At their December work session, members of the Reynolds school board decided to go forward with plans to formulate drug policies for athletes, those who drive to school and/or participate in extracurricular activities.

Because of a recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision saying some random drug screening policies may violate students rights to privacy, Dr. Anthony S. Trosan, superintendent, said members are thoroughly researching their options.

ãWe recognize the policy that weâre trying to develop could be established as unconstitutional,ä he said. ãBut the board wants to continue developing a policy that would be acceptable and not violate (the law).ä

Trosan conceded that about half of the board members have serious reservations about the way to proceed, though everyone on the board is concerned with the issue of possible student drug use.

ãWeâve decided not to sit back and wait for the court,ä he said.

Trosan said the personnel committee led by Dr. George Reeher is working on developing the policy, including looking at how other similar districts have handled drug testing issues.
