Wes Corwin is three counties away, but he should be able to hear the good wishes being shouted his way by classmates at Hickory High School.

The Hickory senior is in Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh, awaiting a heart transplant and has not been to school since October. His classmates, with one day of planning and two days of execution, raised $1,450 to go for Wes' medical expenses.

Senior Jakki Gurneal said she was amazed at the total.

"We only had three days," she said. "We didn't have that long."

Wes' father, Steven Corwin, who received the money Friday, was equally astonished.

"Oh, wow," he said. "That was awesome. It floored me and I know it's going to floor him."

The money was raised Wednesday and Thursday by charging $1 for students to wear hats in school, and posting donation bins in the cafeteria.
